Maan Limburg ('88), Utrecht, is a self-taught photographer whose work is at the crossroads between raw and dreamy. Exploring the world through images that focus on color, texture, movement - she tries to dissect the world of the living into carefully framed slices of art. In her portraits, she tries to uncover the characters of people through careful observation of who they really are if they let their guard down. Through her images, she tries to make sense of it all.

In more practical terms, photography is her passion and beloved livelihood. See more at or via Instagram @maanlimburg.

Tako No Te

Visiting a nearly deserted aquarium somewhere way below Tokyo in 2019 I came eye to eye with this huge, lively octopus. These animals are masters of escape, rather intelligent and love to play and explore. This particular animal was stuck in a tiny round and bare tank.

When I was looking at her, I was mesmerized by the movements of her arms, which are said to have a brain of their own. She stretched herself as long as possible - made herself as small as she could - and ended with rather dramatic arm-movements on the glass. Leaving the aquarium, I felt really sorry for having to leave her in that confinement.
